Youth

Youth Ministry at Palmer calls for passion, patience, and faithfulness – pointing out the sacred in the midst of the chaos of adolescence and walking faithfully with young people as they transition from child to young adult. Youth Ministry at Palmer is a bridging ministry of education, connection, formation, and hopefully, transformation.

Responding to the spiritual needs of teens is about building trusting relationships. Palmer strives to walk with young people on their journeys from childhood to adulthood, recognizing their gifts for ministry, their questions about spirituality, and their desire to make a difference in the world.

The Youth Council at Palmer, a body of youth and adults (who work with youth) lead Palmer's ministry to youth collaboratively guided by the parish vision for formation. Roger Hutchison, Palmer's Director of Christian Formation and Parish Life provides oversight to the Youth Council. Palmer's Curate, The Rev'd Alex Easley will provide clergy support and guidance. Megan Henry serves as Chair of the Youth Council. Youth from each grade level serve as leaders on the council along with adult leaders in communications, special events, worship and outreach. Plans are underway for a fruitful year of sharing the Good News with Palmer youth.

Confirmation for Youth

We are pleased to announce that Palmer will begin offering Pilgrim, a formation class that will also prepare teenagers (Grades 9-12) for confirmation, beginning in January of 2017 during the 10:00 hour on Sunday mornings. This will also be the Sunday school offering for all youth in Grades 9-12. We are excited about the opportunity to get to know your children and to support and challenge them to ‘grow up into Christ’. Teens who have already been confirmed will benefit from this class as well as those preparing for confirmation.

Based on the ancient model of the catechumenate, each class opens with prayer and a reflective reading of scripture, and then offers teaching and discussion around the ‘essentials’ of the faith. The Pilgrim program consists of two stages: Follow and Grow.

The Follow Stage is designed for those beginning to think seriously about their faith and offers four courses, each of which consists of six or seven weekly sessions:

Turning to Christ

The Lord’s Prayer

The Commandments

The Beatitudes

The Grow Stage is designed to help students go further into discipleship and learn more. Again, there are four courses, each of which consists of six weekly sessions:

The Creed

The Eucharist

The Bible

Church and Kingdom

As you can see, this is a commitment! We want to help our young people begin a habit of life long formation in the faith, and we ask that they attend when they’re in town, unless, of course, they’re sick. At some point in the process we’ll ask each teen if they want to be confirmed and we ask that you support them in whatever decision he or she makes.

Teens love to have something good to eat when they gather, so we’ll pass out a sign up sheet at the first session on January 8th. We’ll be meeting in Holy Cross Chapel and you’re invited to join us for the introductory session.

Please contact us if you have any questions.
