Advent Lessons and Carols at Palmer
The Palmer Choir will celebrate its annual Advent tradition of Lessons and Carols December 16 and extends a cordial invitation to the public. The service combines prayers and a sequence of biblical readings with a rich variety of sacred music including hymns, anthems, and carols performed in the English tradition of choral singing. It will be held at 5 PM in the main sanctuary and a reception will be held afterward in Parish Hall.
Lessons and Carols began in the 19th century in England as a para-liturgical service. It is best known as an Advent event anticipating Christmas. It was first celebrated in 1880 when Edward Benson, the Anglican Bishop of Truro, formalized the service for use on Christmas Eve. It is offered every year at King’s College Chapel in London and has been broadcast since 1928 by BBC radio all over the world.
